Tiki is the endless summer, an instant vacation, a sweet and colourful ticket to paradise with no baggage fees. Romanticized since mid-century but too long overlooked as the province of suburban lodges and family resorts, the tiki cocktail is stepping into its moment with sophisticated spirits lovers, skilled mixologists, and intrepid foodies. In Tiki, Brooklyn-based rum expert Shannon Mustipher brings focus on refreshing flavours, fine spirits, and high-impact easy-to-execute presentation. Dozens of easy-to-follow recipes present new versions of classic tiki drinks along with original cocktails using quality rums, infused and fat-washed spirits, liqueurs, fresh fruit juices, and homemade syrups. Tastemakers in the contemporary tiki boom, including Nathan Hazard, Brother Cleve, Laura Bishop, and Ean Bancroft, contribute their recipes. As a true aficionado, Mustipher breaks down Caribbean rums and spirits with practical tasting notes. Fans of classic tiki bibles such as Smuggler s Cove and Potions of the Caribbean can embrace Tiki s modern style and spirit while new tiki fans learn from Mustipher s expertise, accessible recipes, and clear instruction.
"TIKI: Modern Tropical Cocktails is a beautiful, important book: Beautiful because Mustipher's clear-eyed approach to this transporting style of drinks and Noah Fecks's lush accompanying images both burst forth from the page. Important because Mustipher is an assured, nimble guide changing the world. She shows with grace and confidence that a black woman can--and should--be front and center in the cocktail kingdom. Seeing photographs of Mustipher making and serving her own drinks is more refreshing and revolutionary than the invention of the Mai Tai."
Scott Hocker, editor-in-chief of Liquor.com

"TIKI brings tropical cocktails straight into the twenty-first century, where the techniques and ingredients of the modern bar create a new approach to an iconic style. Home bartenders will find a wide assortment of fabulous new libations to try alongside twists on the classics that will be appreciated by newbies as well as seasoned pros. The drinks are beautifully photographed, which should entice you to up both your garnich and ceramic mug game. I've been a Tiki enthusiast since the early seventies, and I'm delighted by Shannon's cocktail imagination and expertise."
Brother Cleve, musician, producer, DJ, and bartender
TIKI doesn't make you thirsty, I don't know what will. There's so much in here: a love letter to a glorious and widely misunderstood cocktail tradition, deep insights into the mechanics of making a drink sing, and as a subtle thread, a primer on how to develop a palate. Of course this book is brimming with bold and exciting recipes and ideas--I'd say it's an essential volume for cocktail mavens and novices alike."
